Description

This is a page from a book I am working on in illustration class. I am doing them in no particular order. My scanner is still broken so it is a photograph.

Serious critique is welcome

I instantly thought of the short story called "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. [link] (One of my favs) The title character's young wife, Faith, has a pink ribbon in her hair but she loses it by the end, signifying a loss of innocence in her and a loss of faith for him (or something, it's been a while since I took that class) lol

ANYWAY... This makes me think, not of a loss of innocence but of growing up. (I don't think you have to lose all your innocence to grow up... but maybe that's just me.) And she's making an effort to reach out and snatch it back from the wind. Lovely.

As for the picture itself, I love that the ribbon is more in the foreground that the little girl. For me, it shifts the focus and adds movement to the picture. All of the natural elements, the clouds, the grass, look great! And the color choices are lovely. Is this an illustration of a children's book?

My only real complaint is the door. It kinda curves in, which makes it look a little surreal in an otherwise realistic-looking picture. The brick wall looks great!

Anyway, I hope this was helpful!
